SKAS-Despertar Educational Center (SKAS-Despertar Centro Educativo) is a Non-Profit, Non-Denominational Foundation that seeks to provide the community with an alternative form of education, offering the necessary means and resources so that the children, especially those with health and adaptation challenges and various abilities or handicaps can integrate in “normal” social processes, within which the State establishes as educational requirements.
At the moment, we work with 80 children, the majority of whom live in poverty and/or have various handicaps such as Down syndrome, paralysis, brain damage, mental retardation, various other syndromes, deafness, etc.
We receive children from two and a half years and, at the moment, the oldest student we have is biologically thirteen years old, but developmentally at a much younger stage. The children with handicaps total approximately 40%. We work within the methodology and philosophy of a Montessorian life, and we are recognized by the Ecuadorian Department of Education as an experimental project, called WHERE HOPE AND LOVE FLOURISH (DONDE FLORECE LA ESPERANZA Y EL AMOR).
The idea of integrating children with various types of abilities and handicaps is to teach the children that we are all equal and that we can coexist and share with one another and learn from each other. The children are our greatest teachers.
